As I was doing my research on the burials at Stones River National Cemetery, I came across some intriguing information in the original cemetery burial record book. It was an entry for a private in the Tennessee 5th Cavalry (Union) buried in what is now Section H. Of all the entries recorded in the book, the clerk made a comment about how the soldier died and named the person responsible for the death. Further on, the record keeper made a similar comment on four other burials.
As I concluded my studies, I was still remembering the unusual comments which led to further investigation. This real-life detective drama became a fascinating tale of discovery. This five-part story will tell the initial mystery, the use of pseudo-armies in the western theater of the Civil War, the renegade leader of the band of "outlaws", the events that occurred on September 28, 1864 and the search for the identities of the victims.
